Students found the challenge super intriguing, putting their thinking skils to the test.
Raise awareness about STEM Enrichment of New Jersey (STEMENJ) among Egg Harbor Township families by sharing our website and social media, while teaching participants deductive reasoning and basic math skills through an engaging challenge.
Participants were presented with a jar of jelly beans and given several tools to determine how many were inside: a scale, an empty jar of the same size, sample cups containing various amounts of jelly beans, and empty weight cups. In teams or individually, they had a couple of minutes to use logic, estimation, and math skills to make their best guess.
We received over 100 guesses, ranging from 50 to 1,000 jelly beans! Many participants eagerly inquired about the mathematical approach, creating a perfect opportunity to demonstrate real-world applications of reasoning and measurement. The activity successfully combined fun and education, strengthening STEMENJ's community presence while fostering curiosity and analytical thinking in young learners.
Our lab was a great success! Students from various ages participated with everyone suceeding in extracting the strawberry DNA alongside being able to see it themselves.
Thanks to all the volunteers who made this event possible! Your support helps us create more amazing experiences for our community.
