The LEGO Bridge Building Workshop held at the Fanwood Library was a wonderful success, with 14 enthusiastic young participants coming together for a fun and engaging hands-on learning experience. During the workshop, students took on the role of young engineers as they designed, built, and tested their own LEGO bridges. Through this interactive activity, they explored fundamental engineering concepts such as strength, balance, and structural design, all while encouraging creativity and teamwork. Participants were guided through the full engineering design process—Imagine → Plan → Create → Experiment → Improve—allowing them to think critically and refine their ideas step by step. Each student worked collaboratively, sharing ideas and learning from one another as they brought their bridge designs to life.
To add an exciting challenge, each bridge had to meet specific requirements: it needed to be at least 4 inches tall and wide enough for a toy truck to pass through. Once completed, the bridges were put to the test using real weights, including a Coke can filled with water, as well as 3 lb and 5 lb dumbbells. Students eagerly watched to see how much weight their structures could support, celebrating both successes and learning moments when designs needed improvement.
We had so much fun hosting Lego Bridge Builders! The workshop was filled with energy, laughter, and curiosity as students experimented, problem-solved, and collaborated.
