Join us for a fun, hands-on workshop where students design and build their own LEGO city! Participants will explore the basics of urban planning, including zoning and transportation, while developing spatial and architectural skills through creative building.
As they construct bridges, towers, and neighborhoods, students will learn simple engineering and physics concepts like balance and stability. Working in teams, they’ll share ideas and collaborate to create a city together, just like real-world planners. Students will also be encouraged to include green spaces and eco-friendly ideas, making their city both creative and sustainable.
Perfect for curious young minds, this workshop combines fun and learning, inspiring future engineers, architects, and innovators. No prior experience is needed - just curiosity and a willingness to build and explore!
The LEGO City Building Workshop at Fanwood Memorial Library was a tremendous success, bringing together 18 enthusiastic young participants for an engaging, hands-on STEM learning experience. Throughout the workshop, students worked in teams to design and construct different components of a LEGO city, including buildings, bridges, roads, transportation systems, parks, and neighborhoods. At the conclusion of the session, all of the individual projects were combined to create one collaborative city, showcasing the creativity and teamwork of the participants.
As they built their structures, students explored key engineering, architecture, and urban planning concepts such as strength, balance, stability, zoning, transportation networks, and sustainable city design. They were encouraged to think critically about how cities function and how green spaces and environmentally friendly features can improve communities.
Participants followed the engineering design process: Imagine → Plan → Create → Experiment → Improve, learning how engineers solve problems through creativity, testing, and continuous improvement. The workshop fostered collaboration, communication, and problem-solving as students shared ideas, refined their designs, and worked together toward a common goal.
The room was filled with excitement, curiosity, and creativity as students experimented with different building techniques and proudly contributed to the final city. By combining fun with meaningful STEM learning, the workshop helped participants develop engineering and design skills, build confidence in their ideas, and gain a deeper appreciation for how cities are planned and constructed. Overall, it was a highly successful event that inspired future engineers, architects, and innovators while providing an enjoyable and memorable learning experience.
