Join us for a fun, hands-on STEM workshop where students will work in teams to design and build structures using marshmallows and toothpicks, and apply their knowledge of geometry and engineering. Prior to engaging in this challenge, participants will learn about stability, balance, teamwork, and creative problem-solving through a simple lesson and slideshow. Students will then explore the engineering design process by planning, building, evaluating, and redesigning their structures, all while developing communication and critical-thinking skills in a collaborative environment.
Perfect for curious young minds, this workshop combines fun and learning, inspiring future engineers, architects, and innovators. No prior experience is needed - just curiosity and a willingness to build and explore!
The Marshmallow Tower STEM Challenge at Fanwood Memorial Library was a tremendous success, bringing together 9 enthusiastic young participants for an engaging, hands-on STEM learning experience.
Throughout the workshop, students worked to design and construct structures using marshmallows, spaghetti and toothpicks, and apply their knowledge of geometry and engineering. Prior to engaging in this challenge, participants learned about stability, balance, and creative problem-solving through a simple lesson and slideshow. Students then explored the engineering design process by planning, building, evaluating, and redesigning their structures, all while developing communication and critical-thinking skills in a collaborative environment. At the conclusion of the session, all of the towers were measured to see which one was tallest and most stable.
Participants followed the engineering design process: Imagine → Plan → Create → Experiment → Improve, learning how engineers solve problems through creativity, testing, and continuous improvement. The room was filled with excitement, curiosity, and creativity as students experimented with different building techniques and proudly made their own Marshmallow tower. Overall, it was a highly successful event that inspired future engineers, architects, and innovators while providing an enjoyable and memorable learning experience.
Thanks to everyone who attended for making this event such a success! Your support helps us create more amazing experiences for our community.
