The Coin Dilemma is a coin game modeled after the famous "Prisoner's Dilemma" where players have to make coin-gaining choices whose outcomes depend on the choice of the other player in a finite number of turns. The goal of the game is to have as many coins as possible (not necessarily more than the other player). The purpose of the lesson is to have students deduce through logic a reliable way to accumulate coins without communicating to the other player.
Students were introduced to a coin game variant of the famous Prisoner's Dilemma problem where they had to make a choice to defect or cooperate. Even though students would have benefited from mutual cooperation, they ended up always defecting which earned them one of the worst outcomes in the game continuously. Through the concept of a payoff matrix, students approached this strange phenomenon and came up with strategies to counteract it!
